No Stopping, No Parking and clearways
No Stopping means you must not stop in the signed area except for an emergency. No Parking permits only a brief attended stop—generally less than two minutes—to pick up or drop off passengers or goods, with the driver remaining within three metres of the vehicle.
A clearway prohibits stopping during the displayed times except for an emergency. A broken yellow edge line may mark a clearway; a continuous yellow line means no stopping.
Distance rules to remember
Unless a sign permits otherwise, keep clear of intersections, crossings, bus stops, railway crossings, fire hydrants and other protected locations. The required distance can be different before and after the feature, so read the question direction carefully.
Useful NSW figures include 20 metres before and 10 metres after a bus stop, three metres from double dividing lines, and one metre between your vehicle and another parked vehicle in front or behind when not angle parking.
Build a mental picture of ‘before’ and ‘after’. Many mistakes come from remembering the numbers but attaching them to the wrong side of the road feature.
Places where parking creates danger
Do not double park, stop across an intersection or crossing, park on a footpath or nature strip, or leave the vehicle where it blocks traffic, visibility or access. Parking across a driveway is generally prohibited except for a very brief passenger pick-up or drop-off when allowed.
Outside a built-up area, do not park near a crest or curve unless approaching drivers can see the vehicle from at least 100 metres away.
Position and secure the vehicle
Unless signs permit another method, park parallel and in the direction of travel. Position the vehicle close to the kerb without obstructing others, apply the parking brake and select Park or the appropriate gear.
Before opening the door or moving away, check for cyclists and traffic. Before leaving the space, signal, check mirrors and blind spots, and give way to road users already travelling on the road.
